Inclusive Spaces

Commitment 1:

Workplace safety and accessibility

Employers commit to evaluating the physical, psychological, and cultural safety and accessibility of workplace spaces and activities.

Organizations should regularly evaluate workplace environments to ensure they are physically, psychologically, and culturally safe and accessible. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to:

  • Assess workplace environments for physical accessibility, psychological safety, and cultural inclusiveness

  • Identify barriers that may limit participation for individuals with visible and non-apparent disabilities

  • Ensure shared spaces support safe participation for people from diverse backgrounds and identities

  • Engage workplace health and safety committees or accessibility leads in reviewing shared spaces

  • Apply inclusive design principles when planning events, meetings, or shared workplace activities

  • Use accessibility and inclusion assessment tools to guide improvements in workplace design and practices

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to:

  • Complete the Inclusive Spaces Review Checklist to identify physical, psychological, cultural, and accessibility barriers within workplace spaces, meetings, or shared activities

  • Implement at least two actions identified through the review process to improve workplace accessibility, inclusion, or safety

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement

Evidence may include:

Impact

Regularly evaluating workplace spaces ensures they are physically, culturally, and psychologically safe and accessible. This commitment helps remove barriers, foster inclusion, and create environments where all employees can participate fully and equitably.
