Commitment 4:

Supporting cultural and religious diversity

Employers commit to accommodating, celebrating, and learning about distinct cultural and religious practices and days of observance whenever possible. 

Employer Actions

Organizations should actively support, accommodate, and learn about employees’ cultural and religious practices. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to: 

  • Recognize and accommodate cultural and religious holidays, observances, and practices in scheduling and leave policies 

  • Provide flexibility in work arrangements to support participation in cultural or religious activities 

  • Provide or identify spaces that support cultural, ceremonial, or spiritual practices where possible 

  • Offer educational opportunities that increase awareness of diverse cultural and religious traditions  

  • Encourage inclusive recognition and celebration of cultural and religious events 

  • Review workplace policies regularly to ensure they remain inclusive of diverse cultural and religious needs 

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to: 

  • Review workplace practices, activities, or policies to identify opportunities to better support cultural and religious inclusion  

  • Implement at least two practices that support cultural or religious diversity, such as:  

  • accommodating cultural or religious observances through scheduling or flexibility practices  

  • recognizing or celebrating cultural or religious events in the workplace  

  • providing educational opportunities related to cultural or religious awareness  

  • identifying spaces that support cultural, ceremonial, or spiritual practices where possible  

  • reviewing workplace practices or policies to support cultural inclusion  

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement  

Evidence may include: 

  • Internal communication or awareness materials  

  • Workplace event or observance examples  

  • Scheduling or accommodation guidance documents  

  • Educational resources or training materials  

  • Reflection summary 

Impact

Supporting and accommodating cultural and religious practices fosters respect, belonging, and inclusion in the workplace. This commitment helps employees feel valued, encourages understanding across diverse backgrounds, and promotes a workplace culture that honours and celebrates diversity.
