Commitment 5:
Land Acknowledgement Practices
Employers commit to incorporating and encouraging land acknowledgements in email signatures, meetings, communications, and self-introductions, either using a land acknowledgement that has been approved by Wolastoqey, Mi'gmaw, or Peskotomuhkati partners, or creating one under the guidance of an Elder or Knowledge Keeper.
Employer Actions
Organizations should incorporate meaningful land acknowledgement practices into workplace communications and activities. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to:
Include land acknowledgements in email signatures, meetings, and organizational communications
Use approved land acknowledgements or develop acknowledgements with guidance from an Elder or Knowledge Keeper
Encourage employees to incorporate land acknowledgements in self-introductions and team activities
Provide education and resources that explain the significance of land acknowledgements and reconciliation
Review acknowledgements periodically to ensure accuracy and cultural appropriateness
Evidence Requirements
To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to:
Review workplace communication or meeting practices to identify opportunities to incorporate meaningful land acknowledgement practices
Implement at least two practices that support awareness and reconciliation, such as:
including land acknowledgements in meetings, email signatures, or organizational communications
using approved land acknowledgements or developing acknowledgements with guidance from an Elder or Knowledge Keeper
providing education or learning opportunities related to reconciliation and Indigenous histories
encouraging respectful and voluntary use of land acknowledgements within workplace activities
Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for learning and reconciliation
Evidence may include:
Land acknowledgement examples or communication materials
Educational resources or learning materials
Meeting agendas or workplace communication examples
Internal guidance or awareness materials
Reflection summary
Impact
Incorporating land acknowledgements demonstrates respect for Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. This commitment fosters awareness, cultural understanding, and reconciliation, helping create a workplace culture that values Indigenous histories, perspectives, and contributions.
