Commitment 8:

Supporting employee resource groups

Employers commit to informing staff about the benefits of forming Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and supporting them in doing so. 

Employer Actions

Organizations should support the development and sustainability of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to strengthen inclusion and employee engagement. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to: 

  • Inform employees about the purpose and benefits of ERGs 

  • Provide guidance and resources for employees interested in forming or leading ERGs  

  • Offer logistical support, such as meeting space, communication tools, or budget allocations, where possible  

  • Encourage leadership participation in or support of ERG initiatives 

  • Review ERG activities regularly to ensure alignment with organizational inclusion goals 

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to: 

  • Review workplace practices to identify opportunities to support employee-led inclusion, networking, or affinity groups  

  • Implement at least two practices from the Employer Actions list above that support Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) or employee-led inclusion initiatives 

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement  

Evidence may include: 

  • Internal communication or awareness materials  

  • ERG guidance documents or toolkits  

  • Meeting or activity examples  

  • Mentorship or networking initiative materials  

  • Reflection summary  

Impact

Employee Resource Groups foster connection, representation, and advocacy for diverse employee communities. Supporting ERGs helps employees feel valued and empowered, enhances inclusion, and strengthens workplace culture by encouraging collaboration, learning, and shared perspectives.

  • Support career development functions of ERGs through mentoring and skill development opportunities.  

  • Connect ERGs with internal and external professional networks.  

  • Encourage leadership engagement in mentoring and networking initiatives.
