Commitment 9:

Leadership in work-life-balance

Employers commit to modelling self-care and work-life balance in leadership, promoting sustainable workloads, encouraging breaks, vacation time, and disconnecting after work hours. 

Employer Actions

Organizations should model healthy work-life balance practices that support employee well-being and sustainable workloads. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to: 

  • Encourage employees to take regular breaks, use vacation time, and disconnect outside work hours 

  • Promote sustainable workloads and reduce expectations of constant availability 

  • Model healthy boundaries and self-care practices through leadership behaviours  

  • Communicate the importance of work-life balance through policies, training, and workplace messaging  

  • Review workload distribution regularly to identify and address burnout risks 

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to: 

  • Review workplace practices and leadership behaviours related to workload, availability, and work-life balance  

  • Implement at least two practices from the Employer Actions list above that support healthy work-life balance and employee well-being  

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement  

Evidence may include: 

  • Workplace wellness or workload guidance materials  

  • Internal communication related to work-life balance  

  • Leadership training or workplace wellness initiatives  

  • Employee feedback or workplace review summaries  

  • Reflection summary 

Impact

Modelling self-care and work-life balance promotes a healthy, sustainable workplace culture. This commitment helps prevent burnout, supports employee well-being, and encourages a culture where boundaries are respected, workloads are manageable, and all employees feel empowered to prioritize their health.
