Commitment 4:

Promoting mental health at work

Employers commit to providing mental health benefits and informing employees about accessible mental health services.  

Employer Actions

Organizations should develop policies and practices that support psychological health and safety in the workplace. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to: 

  • Align workplace mental health policies with recognized standards such as ISO 45003 (Psychological Health and Safety at Work) and CSA Z1003 (Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace) 

  • Identify and address psychosocial risks such as stress, workload pressures, and interpersonal conflict 

  • Inform employees about available mental health resources and crisis supports 

  • Communicate clearly how employees can access available mental health benefits, services, reimbursement processes, and support programs 

  • Promote workplace cultures that support psychological safety, respect, and open communication 

  • Provide confidential and accessible pathways for employees to access mental health supports 

  • Review workplace practices regularly to ensure they continue to support employee well-being and evolving best practices 

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to: 

  • Review or develop workplace practices that support psychological health and safety  

  • Implement at least two mental health or psychological safety practices, such as:  

  • sharing information about mental health or crisis support services 

  • providing employees with clear information about accessing mental health benefits, support services, and how to access them 

  • promoting respectful workplace communication and psychological safety  

  • identifying and addressing workplace stressors or psychosocial risks  

  • providing confidential pathways to access supports  

  • incorporating psychological health and safety considerations into workplace policies or practices  

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement  

Evidence may include: 

  • Workplace mental health or psychological safety policies  

  • Communication materials or resource lists  

  • Wellness initiatives or support information  

  • Training materials, meeting notes, or workplace communications  

  • Reflection summary 

Impact

Psychological health and safety are essential to a productive workplace, as employees may face stress or mental health challenges that affect their well-being and work. Providing accessible supports and clear practices helps organizations proactively address risks, improve engagement, and strengthen workplace culture. This commitment fosters a psychologically safe environment where employees feel supported and able to access the help they need.
