Policies & Guidelines

Commitment 6:

Equitable Cultural Leave

Employers commit to developing a Cultural Leave Policy to support employees attending religious, ceremonial, and cultural commitments, including seasonal activities.

Employer Actions

Organizations should establish cultural leave practices that support diverse religious, ceremonial, and cultural commitments. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to:

  • Develop formal cultural leave policies that outline eligibility, scope, and available options

  • Recognize that grief, bereavement, and ceremonial responsibilities may extend beyond immediate family relationships and may include broader community, cultural, or kinship obligations.

  • Provide flexible leave options, which may include unpaid leave, flexible scheduling, or the use of existing leave where appropriate

  • Protect employee privacy and avoid unnecessary requests for personal or cultural information

  • Provide managers with guidance for reviewing leave requests fairly and respectfully

  • Communicate cultural leave policies clearly and accessibly to employees

  • Promote awareness of cultural and religious observances through internal resources that support workforce planning and inclusivity

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to:

  • Review or develop workplace leave practices that support religious, ceremonial, and cultural commitments

  • Implement at least two practices that support equitable cultural leave, such as:

  • providing flexible scheduling or leave options where operationally possible

  • communicating cultural leave processes clearly to employees

  • protecting employee privacy during leave discussions

  • providing managers with guidance for responding to leave requests respectfully and consistently

  • promoting awareness of cultural or religious observances within the workplace

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement

Evidence may include:

  • Cultural leave policies or procedures

  • Leave request forms or guidance documents

  • Internal communication or awareness materials

  • Manager guidance resources or training materials

  • Reflection summary

Impact

A Cultural Leave Policy ensures employees can observe religious, ceremonial, or cultural events that standard leave may not cover. Clear and flexible policies support inclusion, respect diverse backgrounds, and promote well-being. This commitment fosters a workplace where cultural traditions are honoured, employees feel supported, and organizations have fair, consistent processes for managing leave.
