Commitment 8:
Inclusive workplace attires
Employers commit to ensuring dress codes and uniform policies do not include sex- or gender-based requirements and fully accommodate religious and cultural attire.
Employer Actions
Organizations should review and update dress code and uniform policies to ensure they are inclusive, respectful, and free from gender-based requirements. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to:
Review existing dress code and uniform policies to identify exclusionary or gender-specific requirements
Use gender-neutral language that focuses on professional and safety standards
Permit cultural and religious attire where it does not conflict with legitimate safety requirements
Provide clear processes for requesting attire-related accommodations
Explain safety requirements clearly and apply them consistently
Train managers to apply dress code policies fairly, respectfully, and without bias
Evidence Requirements
To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to:
Review or develop dress code or uniform policies to ensure they are inclusive, respectful, and free from unnecessary gender-based requirements
Implement at least two practices that support inclusive workplace attire, such as:
using gender-neutral dress code language
supporting cultural or religious attire accommodations
clearly communicating workplace safety requirements
providing respectful accommodation request processes
training managers to apply dress code policies fairly and consistently
Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement
Evidence may include:
Dress code or uniform policies
Policy review notes or audit checklists
Accommodation guidance documents or request procedures
Manager training materials or internal communications
