Commitment 9:

Violence, harassment, and discrimination procedures

Employers commit to implementing an accessible, trauma-responsive, and grief-informed procedure for addressing violence, harassment, and discrimination, with a system for ongoing feedback. 

Employer Actions

Organizations should establish complaint procedures that prioritize safety, accessibility, fairness, and respect. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to: 

  • Develop complaint processes that are clear, accessible, and easy to understand. 

  • Apply trauma-responsive and grief-informed approaches when responding to concerns. 

  • Provide multiple reporting options that support employee safety and comfort. 

  • Protect the confidentiality and privacy of individuals involved in complaint processes. 

  • Prohibit retaliation against individuals who report concerns or participate in investigations. 

  • Consider cultural sensitivity and accessibility needs throughout complaint procedures. 

  • Train managers and investigators to respond consistently, respectfully, and in alignment with organizational policies. 

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to: 

  • Review or develop workplace complaint procedures related to violence, harassment, and discrimination  

  • Implement at least two practices that support accessible, respectful, and trauma-responsive reporting processes, such as:  

  • providing multiple reporting options  

  • protecting confidentiality and privacy  

  • communicating non-retaliation protections clearly  

  • incorporating accessibility or cultural safety considerations into complaint procedures  

  • training managers or investigators on respectful and consistent response practices  

  • gathering employee feedback related to workplace safety and inclusion  

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement  

Evidence may include: 

  • Complaint procedures or reporting policies  

  • Reporting forms or communication materials  

  • Training materials or investigation guidance documents  

  • Workplace survey tools or feedback summaries  

  • Reflection summary 

Impact

Accessible and trauma-responsive complaint procedures ensure employees can safely report harassment, discrimination, or other workplace concerns. For organizations, these processes build trust, improve culture, and promote accountability. This commitment fosters a workplace where concerns are addressed fairly, respectfully, and transparently, supporting safety and inclusion for all.
