Commitment 3:

Fair and Inclusive Interviewing Processes

Employers commit to hiring and interviewing practices that support fairness, consistency, and equity.

Employer Actions

Organizations should implement hiring and interviewing practices that support fairness, consistency, and equity throughout the selection process. To fulfill this commitment, organizations are encouraged to:

  • Use diverse hiring panels where operationally possible

  • Include panel members with varied roles, perspectives, backgrounds, or lived experiences

  • Ask all candidates the same core interview questions

  • Use evaluation tools such as scoring rubrics or competency-based assessments to reduce subjectivity

  • Provide annual training on unconscious bias, inclusive hiring, and equitable assessment practices

  • Review hiring outcomes annually to identify patterns, gaps, or barriers related to equity and inclusion

Evidence Requirements

To complete this commitment, organizations are asked to:

  • Review or develop an interview process that supports fairness and consistency

  • Implement at least two inclusive interviewing practices, such as:

  • using structured interview questions

  • using a consistent scoring or evaluation process

  • including more than one interviewer where appropriate

  • including interview panel members with varied roles, perspectives, backgrounds, or lived experiences

  • reviewing interview questions for potential bias or barriers

  • focusing interview questions on job-related skills and qualifications

  • Provide training or learning opportunities related to unconscious bias, inclusive hiring, or equitable assessment practices

  • Submit a short reflection describing actions taken and future opportunities for improvement

Evidence may include:

  • Interview guides or structured interview questions

  • Interview scoring rubrics or evaluation templates

  • Hiring panel guidelines or interview procedures

  • Interview training materials or meeting notes

  • Reflection summary

Impact

Fair interviewing practices help reduce bias and support more consistent hiring decisions. Using structured questions and scoring tools can help employers focus on skills and qualifications. These practices support more equitable hiring and stronger workplace inclusion.
